Happy Hour: Veneto’s The Unwinder

One of the after-office activities you and your friends can do in Victoria, BC Canada is to try the Happy Hour of various restaurants. Don’t be surprised if you see “Appy Hour” in their menus. The first time I heard this from my sister, I thought she just mispronounced “Happy” as “Appy”. I later learned that Appy is actually a short term for appetizers.

Appetizers are normally discounted up to 50% during the Happy Hour. This runs from 4-6PM for some and 3-5PM for others.

Last week, my friends and I tried the Appy Hour of Veneto. They call it The Unwinder.

Call them in advance to make a reservation. We almost missed their Appy hour because we had to wait for an available table.

The Unwinder

Mondays-Fridays, 4-6PM
Contact No.: +1-250-383-7310
Address: 1450 Douglas St. Victoria, BC V8W 2G1
Email: info@venetodining.com

We tried four of their tapas. I’ve listed them below in the order of my preference.

1. Thai Coconut Curry Mussels & Frites

With fresh cilantro and sriracha aioli
Regular Price: $19
Appy Hour Price: $9.5
Must Try!

The serving is good for two. The amount of mussels is balanced with the amount of frites. For those who don’t know, frites is basically potato fries. The sauce was really tasty and can be an alternate dip for toasted bread. They should give free bread to their customers.

This tapa is my favorite among the four.

2. Szechuan Peppered Calamari

With crispy fried banana peppers and lemon wasabi aioli
Regular Price: $14
Appy Hour Price: $7
Nice to have.

I am torn between this and the Korean BBQ Wings. The dip complements the calamari. It was not as oily as I expected. The serving is good for two.

3. Korean BBQ Wings

With toasted sesame seeds and scallions
Regular Price: $14
Appy Hour Price: $7
Nice to have.

I have a weakness for sweet and spicy food. This did not disappoint. I wish they fried the chicken a little bit longer, made it crispier before coating it with the Korean sauce. If you get a chance to go to Singapore, try the chicken in 4Fingers. This can also be shared by two people.
If you’re going to order only this, I would suggest that you go for the chicken wings night instead.

4. Crispy Fried Brussel Sprouts

Caramelized onion, fresh parmesan and balsamic maple reduction
Regular Price: $12
Appy Hour Price: $6
Once is enough.

If you’re bitter with bitter foods, run away from this. I like how they made it crispy though, but a piece is all I needed before moving to the next menu.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of the sprout.
